Hello! If you’re planning a trip to Angkor Wat, below are some tips for visiting this incredible sacred site and how to have the best sunrise experience. This was one bucketlist item that I will always remember.
Tip #1: Rent a tuk tuk to get around.
Getting from your accommodation to the ticket office, then to Angkor Wat and then between each of the sites within the massive temple complex is muchhhhh better with a tuk tuk. Trust me.
Our hotel, the Sarai Resort, helped connect us with a tuk tuk rental, but you can find reputable companies online that will help you with booking. It should only cost around $30 USD for the day.

Tip #2: Bring PLENTY of water.
It was over 100°F by 10am, and humid, so don’t skimp out on the size of the water bottle you bring with you. The tuk tuk driver also held our water for us, so we didn’t need to walk around with the bottles but had plenty of hydration when we got back to our seats.

Tip #3: Dress for the occasion.
And that occasion is adhering to the temple dress code, which is long pants (covering the knee) and shirts that cover your shoulders.

Tip #4: Bring a fan.
Or you can purchase one for a pretty reasonable price directly from vendors at the temples, but this definitely was a life-saver when visiting during the hot months. I bought one there and I’m not sure how I would have gotten through the day without it. (Not to be dramatic or anything… but seriously haha)

Tip #5: Research ahead of time which sites you want to see
There are so many areas within the temple complex, so knowing where to spend your limited time is helpful, especially if you only bought a day pass. We knew we wanted to definitely start out at Angkor Wat, then make our way to see Ta Prohm, Angkor Thom and Banteay Srei.

Tip #6: Go early!
This might seem obvious for trying to see the sunrise, but aim to get to the ticket office as soon as they open that morning.
Going to the ticket office the day of is the only way to get an Angkor Pass, so go as early as possible to avoid a line and then have enough time to be at the base of the temple before the sun starts coming up.
