I want to share one of my FAVORITE money-saving tips (for Americans) — the Schwab bank debit card!
This post is not sponsored by Charles Schwab bank in any way, but I just really want to emphasize how this is one of the best, if not the best, debit card to have with you while abroad.
The full name of the account you’d be opening is a “Schwab Bank High Yield Investor Checking Account”, and although that sounds a bit intimidating, it’s really just a fancy title for a completely free account that comes with a really awesome debit card.

What are the benefits of this amazing card? See the full list from their website, or see some of my favorite perks below:
- No foreign transaction fees
- No service fees
- No account minimum
- All ATM fees incurred get automatically reimbursed
- Can use it anywhere Visa is accepted
It’s basically like carrying cash with you always, without actually needing to carry extra cash or worry about getting the best exchange rates from your bank or from the airport.
You can also open the account just to get the debit card ready for traveling, and then keep the account empty until you’re ready to put funds in for withdrawal while you’re abroad.
I even chatted with a Schwab representative for 10 minutes triple checking all the facts like “Wait.. so there’s no downside to signing up? No fees at all EVER?” and they confirmed this card sounds too good to be true, but it’s not.
New to Schwab? Ask someone you know who already has an account with them (or use this link) so you can get a bonus reward when you sign up. Account holders not get any commission/ bonuses/gold coins for referring at all, it’s just a benefit for the new applicant of being referred by someone who already has an account (:
I hope this tip is as useful to you as it’s been for me!
